The Health Benefits of Medical Marijuana
Let’s understand the benefits of medical marijuana in detail.
1) Medical Marijuana For Treatment of Chronic Pain
Medical marijuana has pain relieving properties, ranging from headache to child birth pain. There have been sessions by IOM, who have talked about medical marijuana’s analgesic properties and related it as a potent/viable treatment option for chronic pain.
Apparently, peripheral nerves, detecting pain sensations, contain several cannabinoid receptors, which bind with cannabinoids (in medical marijuana) and block peripheral nerve pain.
2) Cannabis for Dizziness, Headache And Migraine Relief
For headache, a chemical called anandamide inhibits blood vessels dilation, modulating CGRP and corticol spreading depression. CB1, the cannabinoid receptors, inhibit pain responses, including those of headache. For non-migraine headaches also, medical cannabis has been found to be quite potent.
3) Cannabis Can Treat Nausea And Vomiting
Recent evidence has shown that cannabinoids are helpful to treat the difficult symptoms of nausea and anticipatory nausea, resulting out of chemotherapy in patients, especially when compared to the pharmaceutical agents.
Cannabinoid agonists and the fatty acid amide hydrolase inhibitor, suppress conditioned nausea reactions. Also, is believed that the anti-nausea/anti-emetic effects of CBD are mediated by indirect activation of somatodendritic receptors in the dorsal raphe-nucleus.
4) Medical Marijuana For Treating Back Pain
Medical marijuana is being recognized and recommended by physicians as a viable treatment option for chronic back pain. In fact, the state of New York recommends and allows patients with chronic back pain to access medical marijuana program.
The number of patients seeking the program, for chronic back pain, has increased manifolds. The medical cannabis’s pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties are effective in treating chronic and acute pain conditions, including back pain.
5) Medical Marijuana Can Help Treat Acne
Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD, in medical marijuana, did regulate the sebum secretion, which the skin produced. When a study with mice was done, it was found that the mice, who were given an 11-week high fatty diet (designed to clog arteries), showed lower signs of atherosclerosis, post the administration of THC in the last six weeks. The result could be due to anti-inflammatory properties of the drug as inflammation is often associated with the condition.
52) Medical cannabis for Amyloidosis Treatment
Amyloidosis is a condition in which amyloid proteins are abnormally deposited in organs and tissues. Sometimes, they may result secondarily, as a result of some other illnesses. For instance, the protein that deposits in brain of Alzheimer’s patients is a form of amyloid.
Although, it is said that there is no known treatment for Amyloidosis, yet THC has been found to prevent the formation of amyloid plaques. Cannabis inhibits B-amyloid peptide aggregation and the THC in cannabis is known to suppress cell-mediated immune responses. The latter acts as a neuroprotector and an analgesic.
53) Medical Cannabis for Neurogenesis and Neuroprotectant
Neurogenesis is the process of making new neurons, which is good for improved memory and learning. However, with age, the neural stem cells and their progenitors exhibit decreased proliferation and neuron production.
Medical cannabis is believed to bring back the production levels of neurons. A study found that endocannabinoids, produced by our body, activate our endocannabinoid regulatory system, thereby inducing neurogenesis. When CBD is consumed, it improves the endocannabinoid system, making the body respond by making more CB receptors.
Thus, CBD is a neuroprotectant, which also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties decreasing oxidative stress, nitric oxide synthase, lipid peroxidation, free radicals and mitochondrial dysfunction.
54) Medical Marijuana Can Prevent Brain Damage After Injury
Patients with traumatic brain injury might be medicated with CBD because it maintains calcium homeostasis, inhibits glutamate, decreasing excitotoxicity or the massive release of excitatory brain chemical, glutamate.
The endocannabinoid system has protective benefits, wherein CB1 and CB2, regulate the glutamate release, facilitating anti-oxidant effects. That’s why it’s said that the neuroprotective effects of cannabinoids are known have protective action against brain damage, especially post traumatic injuries.
55) Medical Weed Treats ADHD
ADHD is neurodevelopmental disorder, where the patient has symptoms like difficulty in focusing on tasks, fidgeting, restless behavior and inability to stay quiet for barely a few minutes as well.

Let’s understand non-health related benefits of medical marijuana.
68) Cannabis Strains for Happiness and Euphoria
The most popular reason of recreational cannabis is to experience that instant feeling of happiness and euphoria. There are strains which allow one to feel the same.
THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main compound, which allows the users to experience the feeling high. Strains like Blue Diesel, Chemdawg, Laughing Buddha, Church OG, Black Diamond etc. are just a few strains to ease your stress and worries and help you experience that sense of happiness and euphoria.
69) Cannabis Can Improve Creativity
Effects of smoking cannabis on creativity were studied, but the mechanisms to stimulate creativity are still not so well understood. Nonetheless, cannabis gives psychotomimetic symptoms, which is a divergent thinking aspect, believed to spur creativity in some.
Also, it said that marijuana alters the state of mind, which sometimes forces one to think out of the box, therefore, indulging in in innovative, creative ideas.
70) CBD Oil Helps Quit Smoking
It is said that smoking CBD rich products, both smoking or vaping, helps in relieving stress and anxiety. Since marijuana helps to ease stress, it’s said that people, who are into smoking tobacco might find it easier to quit smoking tobacco and get the ease with smoking marijuana instead. Also, since the tobacco is more harmful for the body, medical cannabis, which is non-addictive, looks like a better option.
Although, the qualifying conditions for availing medical marijuana as a feasible treatment option varies with each of the legalized state, yet most of them recognize medical cannabis as a potent drug having anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, analgesic pain-relieving properties.
While most of the medical conditions, mentioned above, seek marijuana as a medicine, there are by and large some more health issues, which still need to be tested for their action-reaction with cannabis as a drug.
As per Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard-affiliated Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center, medical cannabis lacks sufficient human studies to prove its medical worth. Most of the available information on medical cannabis, are from animal experiments or observational studies. From the research perspective, medical marijuana is hard to study and no wonder, is still considered as Schedule 1 substance at the federal level.
For better information on medical marijuana as a drug, it would be advisable to seek a state licensed physician’s recommendation for the medical condition, before availing the cannabis product for treatment.
